KEY FEATURES OF

Retro Vibes

What makes your style unqiue!

1. Bold fonts

Choice of font in this style is EVERYTHING! Your font choice must be bold (in both senses: thick and brave).

Fonts with rounded edging are a bonus too. See if you can spot some of the bold fonts in the example images here.

2. Warm colours

Retro vibes could choose to represent one of many eras, but one of the most common is the 70's. If you LOVE this too then move into warm colours mixing it up with oranges, yellows, reds and pinks!

3. Punchy illustrations

Think: Gorgeous drawings! This could be anything from bold flowers and fruit that are simply drawn with shapes and flat colours... all the way to vintage style detailed illustrations of old school items!

BONUS TIP: Add texture! Adding in subtle inconsistencies and roughness helps the design feel old and retro. Search "texture" in Canva's elements and overlay it over your design.

Choosing and sticking with your style not only makes you recognisable and resonative with your audience but creates a steady calm within as you build your brand.

BRAND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR

Retro Vibes Fonts

A key characteristic of fonts in this style is something bold and quirky. There are no plain fonts here - they all have a personality.

A tip to pairing fonts is to choose the main hero font and combine 1 or 2 fonts with it (that have less “personality”).

Some search terms you can use in Pinterest to find fonts ideas that might suit you are:

  • “retro font pairings”

  • “70s fonts”

  • “vintage Canva fonts”

Below are some font combos you can use in Canva to get you started! (The words in these imagess are the font names!)

PS. Just search "vintage" in Canva's font section and it'll recommend some more!

BRAND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR

Retro Vibes Colours

Create your colour palette!

I recommend to my students to work on a colour palette of 4-6 (or more!) colours.

Keep in mind: these DON’T have to be 6 different colours, but rather a few colours with light and dark variations of each.

The key is to make sure your colours all have the same “vibe” - ie. all muted, all pastel, all fluro, etc. AND that they actually practically work when it’s time to create a design with them. Some colour palettes look great as a palette, but when you go to use them there might not be enough variation or contrast and they feel very jarring.

So, take some ideas from my suggestions but first TEST them by making a practice graphic or two and see how they work in real life.

Retro tips:

To capture that 70's vibe stick to warm bright colours! Maybe even a pop of a different colour too (ie. a dark blue). Don't be afraid to go bold!

Hex codes: Here are some suggestions for you! Below each colour is the "hex code" - you can type this code into Canva and it will show you that exact colour.

PS. I’ll be in your inbox tomorrow with the final FREE piece to your brand style puzzle - it’s my FAVOURITE part and I’m so excited for you get your hands on it.

BRAND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR

Retro Vibes Elements

The most overlooked part!

No graphic is complete with only text and colour (well some are, but very few!) and this style is no exception!

To really flesh out your style I recommend putting together a Canva folder full of your brand “elements”.

What do I mean by "elements"? ANYTHING! Think: little illustrations, shapes, textures, patterns.

When we have a consistent set of elements we can use over and over in our graphics not only do our designs become beautifully consistent but they are SO much easier to create because we are no longer starting with a blank canvas. Instead we have a whole arsenal of graphics at our disposal.

For example, my business' brand elements are currently purple clouds, grainy textures, blurry circles and little hand-drawn doodles. These help me to add interest to every one of my designs in just a couple of clicks.

Here are some examples of Canva elements that suit Retro Vibes!

Canva search terms:

"Retro flowers"

"Retro 70s"

"Daisy retro flower"

"70's groovy flower"

"70's groovy element"

"Retro vibes"

"Retro clipart"

TIP 1

Choose Your Era

Replace the word "70's" or "groovy" with words relevant to the era you'd like to channel in your retro brand!

TIP 2

Colour Change

Find elements you can easily change the colour of. Insert the element into your design and if it gives you the option to change its colour you’re good to go!
